i think fvd-speed dial should have this feature you can take http://signavatar.com/ as example to make rotate picture. but you can take picture from local or online source. if it make the fvd-speed dial became more heavy why not make it as new extension as
"FVD Speed Dial - Auto rotate [BETA]" dont forget to add notice it will be merged to FVD Speed Dial until it stable. i think all FVD fans will prepared to became a lab rat to improve it.

when I open a new tab I first get the speed dials and then I get a white background for half a second, then after it the wallpaper loads
Seems like the new tab and the speed dials load nearly as fast, but the wallpaper just need half a second longer and thats why I get the white flash in that tab.
